Ukrainian Soldiers Tragically Killed in Russian Missile Attack at Award Ceremony

In a devastating incident near the front line in the southern Zaporizhia region, at least 20 Ukrainian soldiers lost their lives during an award ceremony, falling victim to a Russian missile attack. The tragedy, which occurred on Friday, has prompted a criminal investigation by Ukrainian authorities.

Local media reported that the missile strike took place in the village of Zarichne, approximately 16km (10 miles) from the front line. Zaporizhia Governor Yuriy Malashko revealed that nine civilians were also injured in the attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “This is a tragedy that could have been avoided.” He vowed to uncover the complete truth behind the incident to prevent such heartbreaking events in the future.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed that soldiers from the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade were targeted in the missile strike, although exact casualty figures were not provided. Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the individuals involved, and the orders given.

Criticism has arisen regarding the decision to hold the ceremony in an open area, potentially enabling the attackers to pinpoint the event. One Ukrainian soldier, Ivan Savytskyy, voiced his disappointment on social media, highlighting the tragic loss of 22 brigade members. The ceremony was organized to commemorate Artillery Day, which fell on Friday.

In response to the tragedy, the Ukrainian government declared a three-day mourning period in the western Zakarpattia region, where the 128th assault brigade is based. Despite the ongoing conflict, President Zelenskyy dismissed claims of a deadlock and urged international allies to continue their support, emphasizing the importance of solidarity amidst escalating global tensions.
