Kyiv — The Ukrainian Air Force reported the loss of contact with an American-made F-16 fighter jet during a combat operation in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident occurred as the aircraft was engaging Russian aerial targets in what officials described as a “high-intensity mission” over Ukrainian territory.
According to preliminary information released by the Air Force, the pilot encountered an onboard emergency at approximately 3:30 a.m. Kyiv time.
Despite successfully neutralizing three Russian targets during the mission, the pilot was forced to eject from the aircraft after losing control.
Military officials confirmed that the pilot made deliberate efforts to steer the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting, minimizing the risk of civilian casualties.
The pilot was located and safely evacuated by a Ukrainian search and rescue team shortly after ejection. His condition has been described as satisfactory, and officials confirmed he sustained no life-threatening injuries.
While the Air Force has not disclosed the precise location of the incident or the crash site, they did confirm that a special commission has been formed to investigate the loss of the jet. Initial findings suggest that the incident was not the result of enemy fire.
This marks the second reported loss of an F-16 fighter jet since Ukraine began receiving the advanced aircraft from its Western allies in 2024.
The first crash occurred in August 2024, claiming the life of Captain Oleksii Mes during a mission to repel a massive Russian aerial bombardment. A second pilot, Lieutenant Pavlo Ivanov, was killed in April 2025 during a similar mission.
Both incidents involved experienced pilots and led to growing concerns over the operational risks and demands associated with deploying the sophisticated aircraft in Ukraine’s current war environment.
The Ukrainian Air Force has not provided specific numbers regarding the total F-16 fleet, but the aircraft were acquired through military aid packages from the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and the United States, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s ability to counter superior Russian air power.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously acknowledged the significance of the F-16 program in modernizing Ukraine’s air force. Following the death of Captain Mes in August, Zelensky awarded him the posthumous title of Hero of Ukraine, recognizing his service and sacrifice.
In Thursday’s case, the pilot’s identity has not yet been released pending further medical evaluations and family notification.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian military authorities are focusing on analyzing flight data and cockpit communications to determine the cause of the emergency and prevent similar incidents in the future.
As Ukraine continues to expand its use of F-16s amid ongoing Russian aggression, the latest incident highlights both the strategic value and the complex operational challenges associated with integrating the Western fighter jets into a wartime theater. Further updates are expected once the commission concludes its initial investigation.
