UK government veterinarians on Tuesday killed Geronimo, an alpaca whose death sentence for international tuberculosis has made international headlines and pitted animal rights activists against the state.
Veterinarians in blue faces, masks and glasses, supported by police, came to the farm near Wickwar, South Gloucestershire, where the animal lives, and took Geronimo out of his pen.
The scene was witnessed by animal activists and journalists who fought on the farm in Wickwar, 175 kilometers (110 miles) west of London, promising to stop the death.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has confirmed that the animal has been euthanized.
The controversial camelid has been sentenced to death after testing positive for beef TB twice.
Its owner, Helen Macdonald, argued that the tests produced false positives and fought for a third test.
Macdonald, a veterinary nurse, said Alpaca was negative when he was brought from New Zealand and she spent thousands of pounds to save a failed court battle to save the animal.
