UK slammed for lack of diversity in BAFTA nominations

Nominee’s for British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)
were revealed on Wednesday. However, the UK has nominated 20 in the acting category. All the 20 nominated actors are white, which is raising questions on the nation’s representation.

Cinema lovers and movie critics slammed the UK for lack of diversity.

The winners will be declared at a function on February 2 at London’s Regal Albert Corridor.

Each of the 20 acting candidates for the English Institute of Film and TV Expressions (BAFTA) grants, reported on Tuesday, were white.

All best director candidates were men for the seventh successive year, and four out of the five were white.

Marc Samuelson, the seat of BAFTA’s film committee, accused the “incensing absence of variety in recognition” in the acting.

“It’s only a dissatisfaction that the industry isn’t moving as quick as surely the entire BAFTA group might want it to be,” he revealed to a magazine.

The EE Rising Star grant is the main BAFTA class for which people, in general, can cast a ballot.

Addressing the BBC Radio 4’s Today Program, BAFTA Chief Amanda Berry said she was “disillusioned” by the absence of sex ratio in the nominations, yet noticed that 13 female actors were nominated in different categories, including Best Short Film and Best Adjusted Screenplay.

Asad Dhunna, the organizer of The Unmistakable, a culture and correspondences consultancy, told Al Jazeera that a decent variety in grants occasions could help energize better portrayal in the film business.

“Individuals need to see themselves reflected in all enterprises for them to accept they encapsulate a spot,” he told Al Jazeera.
He further added that:

“We have to see increasingly unique narrating and accounts that really reflect English decent variety. It’s not just about praising existing ability in human expressions. It’s tied in with perceiving and raising the commitment of craftsmen of various foundations so others can follow on their ways.”
