Two Killed, Five Injured in Avalanche on Switzerland’s Eiger Mountain

Bern, Switzerland — A deadly avalanche that swept across the slopes of the Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps on Saturday afternoon has claimed the lives of two hikers and injured five others, according to a statement released by Bern canton police on Sunday.

The avalanche occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. local time on the nearly 4,000-metre-high Eiger, one of the most iconic peaks in the Bernese Alps. The slide struck without warning, catching several hikers off guard as they traversed the snow-covered terrain.

The five injured individuals were airlifted by helicopter to nearby hospitals shortly after the avalanche hit. Emergency services responded quickly to the distress call, enabling a timely rescue despite the mountain’s challenging conditions.

The injured have since been reported to be in stable condition, with authorities confirming that none of their lives are in danger.

Among the injured is a Belgian woman who currently resides in Switzerland. The other four victims are Swiss nationals, all also residing within the country.

Details regarding the specific injuries sustained have not been disclosed, though police described them as ranging from minor to moderate.

“The five injured people were transported to hospital by helicopter. Fortunately, they are all now considered to be out of danger,” Bern police said in a public statement.

The identities and nationalities of the two deceased hikers have not yet been released, pending notification of their families. Police and mountain rescue officials continue to investigate the circumstances of the avalanche, including what may have triggered it.

The Eiger, renowned for its dramatic north face and popular climbing routes, attracts experienced mountaineers and tourists alike throughout the year.

While the mountain offers breathtaking views and challenging ascents, it is also prone to natural hazards such as rockfalls and avalanches, particularly during periods of variable weather or unstable snow conditions.

Saturday’s avalanche has once again highlighted the inherent risks of alpine activities, even during the summer months when avalanche danger is typically lower.

Swiss authorities have urged climbers and hikers to remain vigilant and check official avalanche bulletins and weather forecasts before embarking on high-altitude excursions.

The Swiss Alpine Club and rescue services are also reminding visitors to the region of the importance of carrying proper safety equipment, including avalanche transceivers, probes, and shovels, and to consider traveling with qualified guides in unfamiliar terrain.

An investigation is underway to assess the stability of the surrounding area and determine whether further precautionary measures need to be taken to ensure the safety of other climbers in the region. No additional avalanches have been reported since the incident.

Authorities have not yet indicated whether the names of the deceased will be released or if further information about the circumstances of the avalanche will be made public in the coming days.
