With exactly one year remaining until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, serious questions are being raised about England’s readiness after a 3-1 defeat to Senegal in an international friendly at Nottingham’s City Ground on Tuesday.
The loss marked Thomas Tuchel’s first defeat as England manager since taking the helm from Gareth Southgate following the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.
Despite the result coming in a non-competitive match and with a heavily rotated squad, the defeat triggered boos from frustrated fans in attendance and reignited concerns over the national team’s direction.
Senegal’s victory – their first ever over England in 22 attempts – was not only historic but also symbolic of England’s current uncertainty under Tuchel.
The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss was brought in to instil tactical clarity and a winning mentality. However, the early signs are mixed.
“We let ourselves down. We let the country down. We let the badge down,” admitted midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White after the final whistle. “It really wasn’t good enough… we should have started the game with intensity instead of waiting until we were behind.”
England started brightly in Tuchel’s tenure, defeating, Andorra, and Latvia without conceding. But the Senegal defeat has exposed the fragility behind the early optimism, and with tougher tests looming in the build-up to the World Cup, time is running short.
Tuchel has urged fans not to panic. “This is a process,” he said post-match. “Of course, it’s disappointing. But these matches are important for learning, and we’re still building toward our identity.”
That identity, however, remains elusive. Under Southgate, England were often criticized for lacking attacking ambition and a defined style. Despite boasting one of Europe’s most talented squads, Southgate’s cautious approach fell short at critical moments in major tournaments.
Now, observers are struggling to identify what Tuchel is bringing to the table. “Senegal were better, they deserved the win,” said BBC pundit Leon Osman. “This was supposed to be the time for tactical evolution, but it’s unclear if Tuchel has a plan.”
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, speaking on ITV, questioned the group’s spirit. “They don’t look like a happy team. Are they really united? Something’s not quite right.”
Tuchel’s brief tenure hasn’t been helped by the circumstances of his appointment. Though available after his Bayern Munich exit, the FA handed the interim reins to U21 boss Lee Carsley for six matches before formally announcing Tuchel in December 2024 on an 18-month deal. The delay left the German tactician with limited time to implement his philosophy.
With only a handful of international breaks before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, the pressure is now firmly on Tuchel to turn the tide and find answers. Fans and pundits alike are hoping this summer marks a period of clarity and conviction, not confusion and crisis.
For now, the countdown continues – and England’s road to redemption looks as uncertain as ever.
