Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen has officially opened its Christmas season, unveiling a spectacular winter wonderland that draws visitors from Denmark and around the world.
The historic amusement park, now 182 years old, has once again transformed itself into a glowing holiday attraction featuring more than one million lights, thousands of trees and a festive atmosphere steeped in Scandinavian tradition.
The park’s annual Christmas makeover is one of the most anticipated events in the Danish holiday calendar. What makes this year particularly remarkable is the sheer speed of the transformation.
Tivoli’s staff shifted the entire park from its Halloween theme to its Christmas setting in just 11 days, a logistical feat that involves installing lights, setting up markets, arranging displays and preparing rides for winter operation.
Park director Kasper Schumacher highlighted the emotional connection many visitors have with Tivoli’s Christmas season. He said that families return year after year to experience what they describe as “classic Christmas in Tivoli,” a blend of nostalgic décor, festive foods, traditional performances and illuminated pathways.
According to Schumacher, the park aims to offer a space where guests can share meaningful holiday moments, whether strolling through lantern-lit gardens or enjoying the winter-themed rides.
Throughout the park, wooden stalls sell Danish Christmas treats, including æbleskiver, gløgg and seasonal pastries, adding to the old-world charm of the experience.
Visitors can also enjoy Tivoli’s signature shows, winter parades and live musical performances that celebrate both modern and traditional aspects of Danish Christmas culture.
The lighting displays remain the biggest draw, transforming the gardens into a glowing landscape that reflects across lakes, rooftops and ornate bridges.
This year’s installation includes new lighting designs and expanded tree decorations that create an immersive visual experience. Many visitors choose Tivoli specifically for its lights, often describing it as one of Northern Europe’s most beautiful winter attractions.
Despite the winter chill in Copenhagen, the park continues to operate many of its rides, including the historic wooden roller coaster and family-friendly attractions adapted for the season. Tivoli’s team ensures that both thrill-seekers and families with young children can find activities suited to the festive mood.
