Switzerland End 87-Year World Cup Knockout Wait With Convincing Victory Over Algeria

Switzerland ended nearly nine decades of frustration on the World Cup stage by defeating Algeria 2-0 in the knockout phase, securing their first victory in a World Cup elimination match since 1938 and advancing confidently into the last 16.

Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ensured Murat Yakin’s side comfortably progressed in Vancouver, where Switzerland displayed composure, attacking quality and defensive discipline throughout the contest.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Swiss football, ending an 87-year wait for success in a World Cup knockout fixture. Switzerland also reached the last 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup, underlining the nation’s growing consistency on football’s biggest stage.

Switzerland made an energetic start and immediately looked dangerous whenever they attacked down the wings. Their breakthrough arrived in the 10th minute after an outstanding individual effort from Freiburg winger Johan Manzambi.

The talented youngster skipped past Algeria defender Aissa Mandi with impressive footwork before driving into the penalty area and producing a perfectly weighted cutback.

Breel Embolo arrived at the right moment to calmly finish into the net, giving Switzerland a deserved early advantage while leaving Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane with virtually no chance of making the save.

The opening goal rewarded Switzerland’s positive approach and highlighted the excellent understanding developing among their attacking players throughout the tournament.

Algeria attempted to respond and gradually enjoyed more possession during the remainder of the first half. However, despite spending periods in Switzerland’s half, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against a disciplined Swiss defensive unit.

Their best chance came through Fares Chaibi, whose effort lacked power and precision, allowing goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to gather comfortably without being seriously tested. Switzerland maintained their defensive shape and rarely allowed Algeria to build sustained pressure inside dangerous areas.

Any hopes Algeria had of staging a comeback were dealt a major blow immediately after the restart. Just 46 seconds into the second half, Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s advantage with an excellent finish inside the penalty area.

The swift goal shifted the momentum firmly in Switzerland’s favour and left Algeria chasing the game for the remainder of the match. Ndoye’s composed strike reflected the confidence that has characterised Switzerland’s performances throughout the tournament.

The two-goal cushion also allowed Murat Yakin’s team to control possession and dictate the tempo while frustrating Algeria’s attempts to launch a response.

Statistically, the victory carried historic significance. It was the first time Switzerland had scored more than once in a World Cup knockout match since their unforgettable 7-5 quarter-final defeat against Austria during the 1954 tournament.

Even more importantly, it represented Switzerland’s first knockout victory since defeating Germany in the 1938 World Cup, which was played before the introduction of the modern group-stage format.

For generations of Swiss supporters, it was a long-awaited achievement that finally erased one of the nation’s longest-standing World Cup records.

Although Switzerland controlled most of the second half, they nearly added a third goal late in the match. Fabian Rieder found himself completely unmarked at the back post with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

However, the midfielder failed to connect cleanly with the ball, sending his effort harmlessly toward Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who gratefully collected after appearing beaten. While the missed opportunity prevented an even more emphatic scoreline, it did little to diminish Switzerland’s commanding performance.

One of the standout performers was Johan Manzambi, whose display once again demonstrated why he is emerging as one of Europe’s brightest young talents. The Freiburg winger consistently troubled Algeria’s defence with his pace, creativity and willingness to attack defenders one-on-one.

His assist for Embolo’s opener was a moment of exceptional quality, combining close control, acceleration and intelligent decision-making. The 20-year-old has now registered three goals and two assists during the tournament.

According to Opta statistics, Manzambi became the first Swiss player since detailed World Cup data collection began in 1966 to be directly involved in five goals during a single tournament. At just 20 years and 261 days old, he is also the youngest player from any nation to reach that milestone since 1966.

His performances have inevitably attracted attention from clubs across Europe. Although Freiburg will undoubtedly hope to retain one of their most exciting young players, Manzambi’s displays on football’s biggest stage are likely to increase interest from several elite European teams.

Equally influential was Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, who celebrated his 150th international appearance with another composed midfield performance. The experienced Sunderland midfielder dictated possession, controlled the rhythm of the game and provided leadership throughout the contest.

His calm distribution and tactical awareness helped Switzerland maintain authority, particularly during Algeria’s brief spell of pressure before half-time. Xhaka’s experience continues to provide the perfect balance alongside Switzerland’s emerging generation of young attacking talent.

For Algeria, the defeat represented another missed opportunity to make history. The North African side entered the match hoping to secure their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout fixture.

Instead, they found themselves unable to break down one of the tournament’s most organised defensive teams. Despite moments of promising build-up play, Algeria lacked the cutting edge required to seriously challenge Switzerland.

Their attacking players were repeatedly forced into speculative efforts or crowded out before creating meaningful chances.

As the final whistle sounded, Switzerland celebrated a victory that will rank among the country’s most memorable World Cup achievements. Their combination of defensive organisation, clinical finishing and youthful attacking flair suggests they could become dangerous opponents as the tournament progresses.

Attention now turns to the next challenge. Switzerland will face the winner of Colombia and Ghana in the last 16 on 7 July at BC Place in Vancouver.

With confidence growing and several players producing career-best performances, Murat Yakin’s side will believe they have the quality to continue their impressive World Cup journey.
