Swiss Alps: Five Missing Skiers Found Deceased, Search Ongoing for Sixth

Search and rescue operation launched Saturday for missing skiers in Swiss Alps. Five of six found dead at 21:20 local time. No signs of life. Statement by Valais police

Switzerland, March 11, 2024

The bodies of five missing skiers have been discovered in the Swiss Alps, according to local authorities. The group had embarked on a ski tour near the towering Tete Blanche mountain, a journey that ended in tragedy amidst severe weather conditions.

The search and rescue operation, initiated on Saturday after the skiers failed to return from their excursion, led to the grim discovery of five of the six individuals at approximately 21:20 local time. Tragically, they were found “without any signs of life,” as stated by the Swiss Valais canton police.

The skiers, all Swiss nationals, ranged in age from 21 to 58 years old. Their intended route from Zermatt to Arolla, tracing the Swiss-Italian border, is renowned for its challenging terrain and breathtaking vistas. However, inclement weather conditions proved to be insurmountable.

Severe winds and heavy snowfall had engulfed the region, impeding rescue efforts and rendering air assistance impossible. Anjan Truffer, head of Zermatt’s air rescue service, described the weather as “so bad that flying is not an option,” citing “very strong winds, heavy snow, high avalanche danger, and zero visibility.”

While the possibility of an avalanche initially loomed large, Mr. Truffer suggested that the skiers may have succumbed to the treacherous weather rather than a direct avalanche strike.

Remarkably, the group disappeared in an area of the Zermatt Arolla route where the risk of avalanches is traditionally low.

Ski touring, a popular activity in the Alps, demands a high level of skill and preparation.

Typically, participants equip themselves with location finders and avalanche shovels, yet even these precautions may prove insufficient in the face of extreme conditions.

The last communication from the group was recorded overnight, though it was non-verbal. Despite the lack of explicit information, rescue services were able to approximate their location, guiding the search efforts.

The Zermatt to Arolla route is a segment of the famed 120km “Haute Route,” attracting experienced skiers seeking a challenging and rewarding expedition.

However, its allure is matched only by its inherent dangers, with unpredictable weather and rugged terrain testing even the most seasoned adventurers.

As news of the tragic discovery reverberates through the Alpine community, authorities continue their search for the sixth missing skier.

The relentless efforts of rescue teams persist despite the formidable conditions, fueled by the hope of a miraculous outcome amidst the sorrowful backdrop.

In the wake of this sobering incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the mountains and the importance of exercising caution and preparedness in all Alpine pursuits.

The hearts of many are heavy with grief, mourning the loss of lives cut short in pursuit of adventure amidst nature’s majesty.
