Russian troops have taken complete control of the eastern city of Vuhledar, a strategic location that Ukrainian forces have defended since the onset of Moscow’s full-scale invasion two and a half years ago.
The eastern military command of Ukraine confirmed the loss on Wednesday, instructing remaining troops to withdraw from the area to prevent encirclement.
For over two years, Russian forces have focused on capturing Vuhledar as part of their broader strategy to advance northward toward critical transportation hubs like Kurakhove and Pokrovsk.
The city, located in the Donetsk region, has been the focal point of intense military conflict, with both sides suffering significant casualties.
Reports indicate that Russian troops have made considerable advances in the city, with Donetsk regional authorities noting that they had nearly reached the city center by Tuesday.
Pro-Kremlin military bloggers also circulated videos showcasing Russian soldiers hoisting flags atop various buildings in Vuhledar, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Amid the chaos, two soldiers from Ukraine’s 72nd brigade, who managed to evacuate the city before the final assault, reported that their units had retreated from Vuhledar.
They described harrowing conditions during the withdrawal, as many soldiers faced perilous situations while trying to escape.
A machine-gunner, opting to remain anonymous, recounted the struggles of Ukrainian soldiers attempting to flee on foot, stating that it was impossible to evacuate by other means due to ongoing attacks.
The soldiers noted that numerous comrades were wounded or killed by Russian drones and artillery fire during their attempts to escape.
One soldier, identified as Roman, expressed concern over the fate of many who remain unaccounted for. “We lost many friends in those moments; some are still missing,” he lamented.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Moscow has launched several unsuccessful attempts to seize Vuhledar, leading to some of the most significant tank battles in the region.
Recently, however, Russian military strategy shifted, favoring flanking maneuvers over direct assaults.
This tactical change has proven effective; last month, Russian forces captured the nearby villages of Prechystivka to the west and Vodyane to the east, completing a pincer movement that encircled Vuhledar.
The overwhelming advantage of Russian forces in terms of weapons and troop numbers has significantly impacted the conflict dynamics in eastern Ukraine.
Some estimates suggest a ratio of forces as high as seven to one, allowing Russian troops to penetrate Ukrainian defensive lines and approach the city.
As the situation in Vuhledar evolves, concerns mount regarding the implications for broader regional stability and the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing civilians caught in the crossfire.
The latest developments highlight the persistent volatility in eastern Ukraine, as both military strategies and territorial control continue to shift in this protracted conflict.
