Bucharest, Romania — Romania’s parliament has approved a new law authorizing its military to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that unlawfully enter the country’s airspace.
The legislation, passed on February 26, comes in response to a series of incidents involving Russian drones crashing on Romanian territory during attacks targeting Ukraine. The move signals a significant escalation in Romania’s defense posture amid ongoing regional tensions.
The new law permits the destruction, neutralization, or seizure of drones that cross the Romanian border or operate within its airspace without proper authorization.
It aims to enhance national security and safeguard the country’s sovereignty, especially in light of increased threats posed by Russia’s military activities in the region.
The legislation will soon be forwarded to interim President Ilie Bolojan, who has been performing presidential duties since the resignation of former President Klaus Iohannis on February 10.
Strengthening Defense Capabilities
Interim Senate Chair Mircea Abrudean expressed strong support for the legislation, highlighting its importance in bolstering Romania’s defense capabilities.
“This law is a necessary measure to ensure the protection of our airspace and to respond decisively to any threats,” Abrudean stated.
He emphasized that Romania, as a NATO member, must enhance its preparedness in light of the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Romania’s military has previously encountered fragments of Russian drones on its territory. In January, wreckage from such drones was discovered in two communities near the Ukrainian border following an aerial assault by Russian forces.
The attacks targeted infrastructure along the Danube River, which has become a critical supply route for Ukraine. In response, Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets to patrol its airspace and prevent further violations.

The newly passed law builds on a draft proposed by Romania’s Defense Ministry in October 2024, which advocated for the right to down any unauthorized aircraft entering its airspace.
