Putin Open to Talks with Zelensky, but Kremlin Questions Ukrainian Leader’s Legitimacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed willingness to engage in negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but the Kremlin has raised concerns about the Ukrainian leader’s legitimacy, suggesting that any agreements made during such talks would require careful legal scrutiny.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Putin remains open to discussions if necessary but noted that Zelensky’s status could complicate the legal validity of any potential agreements.

According to Peskov, this issue must be addressed as part of any negotiation framework, reinforcing Russia’s firm stance on the matter.

Zelensky, in a recent interview, stated that he was prepared to meet with Putin if it would lead to peace in Ukraine. However, he emphasized that such talks would require a clear and structured plan to end the war.

At the same time, the Ukrainian leader has accused Putin of avoiding direct negotiations. Zelensky also highlighted that his willingness to engage in dialogue depends on continued support from the United States and Europe.

Meanwhile, Moscow has clarified its position on Ukraine’s geopolitical future. Peskov stated that Russia does not oppose Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union, as it does not view economic integration as a security threat.

However, he reiterated Russia’s strong opposition to Ukraine joining NATO, describing it as a direct challenge to Russia’s security.

The Kremlin has also addressed speculation regarding a possible meeting between Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Peskov noted that there were no current updates on such a meeting but suggested that discussions could bring further clarity on the matter.

The geopolitical landscape could shift significantly depending on the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, particularly if Trump, who has previously advocated for swift negotiations to end the war, returns to office.

China has also weighed in on the issue, urging all relevant parties to engage in peace talks as soon as possible. A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry stated that Beijing welcomes all efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

However, Western nations have accused China of indirectly supporting Russia’s war efforts while maintaining strong diplomatic and economic ties with Europe.

Beijing has defended its position, asserting that it has the right to conduct business with Moscow and insisting that it does not supply Russia with lethal weapons.

China previously proposed a peace plan in 2023, positioning itself as a potential mediator in the conflict. However, the proposal received a lukewarm response from Ukraine and its Western allies, who viewed it as favoring Russian interests.

The Kremlin’s skepticism over Zelensky’s legitimacy stems from the fact that his official presidential term ended in May 2024. Ukrainian officials have countered that elections cannot be held while the country remains under martial law due to the ongoing war.

Additionally, Ukraine has legally prohibited direct negotiations with Putin in response to Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions in 2022.

Despite these challenges, diplomatic discussions continue at various levels, with international actors closely monitoring the evolving situation.

The prospect of peace remains uncertain, as both sides remain entrenched in their positions while external players attempt to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape.
