Portugal Fuel Prices Set for Sharp Diesel and Petrol Drop Next Week

Portugal | Lisbon District: Forecasts indicate significant diesel and petrol price reductions from August 10 as global oil markets stabilize

Motorists across Portugal are expected to receive welcome financial relief next week as industry forecasts indicate a substantial reduction in fuel prices. Beginning August 10, both diesel and petrol are projected to become significantly cheaper, marking one of the largest weekly declines seen in recent months.

According to projections released by the Automobile Club of Portugal (ACP), diesel prices are expected to fall by approximately 12 euro cents per litre, while petrol prices could decrease by around 12.5 euro cents per litre. The anticipated reductions come after recent shifts in international crude oil markets and adjustments in fuel pricing trends.

If the projections are confirmed, the national average price of regular diesel will decline to approximately 1.931 euros per litre. Meanwhile, the average cost of 95-octane unleaded petrol is forecast to fall to around 1.855 euros per litre, offering considerable savings for households and businesses that rely heavily on road transport.

The ACP emphasized that these figures remain forecasts rather than confirmed prices. The organization explained that the estimates are based on crude oil prices recorded at the close of trading on the previous Thursday. Any significant fluctuations in international oil markets before the end of Friday’s trading session could still influence the final prices introduced at filling stations.

Current fuel prices remain notably higher than next week’s projections. According to the latest daily averages published by Portugal’s Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), regular diesel currently costs approximately 2.051 euros per litre, while 95-octane petrol averages about 1.980 euros per litre nationwide.

The DGEG calculates these national averages using fuel prices submitted by filling stations across the country. The calculations are weighted according to the volume of fuel sold during the most recent reporting period and also include discounts available through fleet cards and other promotional programs commonly offered by retailers.

Despite the publication of national average prices, motorists should expect some differences between individual filling stations. Portugal operates a liberalized fuel market, allowing companies to establish their own pricing strategies. As a result, prices may vary depending on location, operating costs, competition and commercial promotions offered by individual fuel retailers.

The expected reduction represents welcome news for consumers who have experienced considerable volatility in fuel prices over recent months. Rising transportation costs have affected both household budgets and business expenses, particularly in sectors dependent on logistics, freight transport and daily commuting.

International developments continue to play a decisive role in determining fuel prices throughout Europe, including Portugal. Global oil markets have remained sensitive to geopolitical tensions, especially following military confrontations involving the United States, Israel and Iran in the Middle East.

One of the principal concerns for global energy markets has been disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic maritime passage is responsible for transporting roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies. Any threat to shipping routes through the strait immediately raises concerns over supply disruptions, often triggering sharp swings in crude oil prices.

Although international oil prices have recently shown signs of easing, market analysts continue to monitor geopolitical developments closely. Any renewed escalation in regional conflict or disruption to energy supplies could quickly reverse the downward trend currently benefiting consumers.

Portugal’s government has also played an important role in reducing the impact of volatile fuel markets on drivers. Authorities previously introduced an extraordinary and temporary reduction in the country’s fuel tax, known as the ISP, whenever fuel prices increase by more than 10 euro cents.

The temporary tax measure was designed to protect consumers from sudden spikes in international oil prices while helping businesses manage rising operating costs. Officials have continued adjusting the tax reduction in response to changes in global energy markets over recent weeks.

As fuel prices are now forecast to decline, the government is expected to review the level of the temporary ISP discount once again. Any changes to the tax adjustment may slightly alter the final pump prices introduced from Monday, depending on market conditions and official decisions.

For many Portuguese families, lower fuel prices could provide immediate financial relief. Reduced transport expenses often help ease broader household budgets, particularly during periods of high inflation when consumers face rising costs across multiple sectors, including food, housing and utilities.

Businesses are also likely to benefit from cheaper fuel. Transport companies, delivery services and logistics operators could experience lower operating expenses, potentially improving efficiency and reducing pressure on prices charged to customers. Agricultural producers and manufacturers that depend on road transportation may also see modest cost savings.

Economists note that although fuel prices remain heavily influenced by global events beyond Portugal’s control, government intervention through targeted tax adjustments has helped soften the impact of sudden market shocks. Continued monitoring of international oil markets remains essential as geopolitical uncertainty persists.

Industry observers caution that forecasts should not be interpreted as guaranteed prices. Crude oil values can change rapidly due to political developments, supply concerns or unexpected economic data. Currency exchange movements between the euro and the US dollar can also influence the final cost of imported petroleum products.

Nevertheless, the projected decline represents encouraging news for millions of motorists preparing for another week of travel. If current forecasts hold, Portugal will experience a noticeable reduction in fuel prices from August 10, providing welcome relief after months of fluctuating energy costs.

Consumers are expected to watch closely as filling stations update their prices next week. Whether commuting to work, transporting goods or planning summer travel, drivers across the country stand to benefit from lower fuel costs, provided international markets remain relatively stable through the weekend.
