Pope Francis to undergo intestinal surgery

Pope Francis is undergoing an intestinal surgery on Wednesday at Rome’s Gemelli hospital and remain admitted for several days.

Witnesses reported that Pope Francis’ white Fiat 500 left the Vatican just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday on its way to Gemelli with an escort.

According to the Vatican, the Pope was undergoing “laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery with prosthesis” to cure a “recurrent, painful, and worsening” intestinal constriction.

An open abdominal procedure called a laparotomy. A surgeon can use it to both diagnose and treat problems. According to the statement, Pope Francis had a blocked laparocele, which is a hernia that developed over a prior scar.

According to the statement, “the stay at the medical facility will last several days to allow for the typical post-operative course and full functional recovery.”

Even while he is asleep and in the hospital, Pope Francis continues to be in command of the Vatican and the 2.3 billion-member Catholic Church.

Pope Francis spent 10 days at Gemelli in July 2021 had 33 centimetres (13 inches) of his big intestine removed. According to the Vatican, he had experienced significant intestinal inflammation and constriction. Francis claimed the diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinal wall, which had caused the 2021 surgery, had reappeared in a January interview with The Associated Press.

Given the demanding impending travel schedule this summer, the fact that he is returning for surgery suggests that he was forced to treat the intestinal problem.
