Police in Manchester are searching for a driver who fled the scene after a devastating crash that resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl in the city centre.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning when a van collided with a tram near Manchester Art Gallery.
The impact caused the van to veer onto the pavement, striking the child. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and provided immediate medical assistance before transporting her to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Authorities have confirmed they are aware of the identity of the suspect and are actively working to bring him into custody. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were treating the crash as an isolated incident and assured the public that there was no wider threat to the community.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Two air ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene alongside paramedics and police officers. The area around the crash site was cordoned off, and several roads were temporarily closed to facilitate emergency response efforts. Tram services were also disrupted as investigators worked to gather evidence.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has stated that it is fully cooperating with the police inquiry. Manchester City Council also extended its support to the victim’s family.
“We will ensure that the family receives our full support during this unimaginably difficult time,” a spokesperson for the council said.
Councillor Pat Karney spoke about the tragedy, saying, “I can’t imagine the pain and grief that this family is going through.”
Debate Over Junction Safety Deferred
The crash has sparked public discussion about the safety of the junction where it occurred. However, officials have urged restraint, emphasizing that the focus should remain on the grieving family.
“It would be totally inappropriate to have a debate about it at this stage—we’re actually thinking about the family,” Karney said.
He added that a full investigation would take place, and any necessary recommendations regarding road safety would be considered by the council after the police inquiry and coroner’s report.
Ongoing Search for the Suspect
As of Sunday, police continue their search for the driver, who abandoned the vehicle and fled after the collision. Officers have not yet released further details about the suspect but reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the young victim.
Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to come forward.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their condolences and concerns over road safety in the city.
