New Train Routes from London to Germany, Switzerland, and France Proposed

LONDON – Plans to expand international rail connectivity from London St Pancras station have been unveiled, potentially introducing direct train services to Germany, Switzerland, and France.

London St Pancras Highspeed, the company that owns the station and operates the rail track to the Channel Tunnel, aims to significantly boost passenger capacity and attract new train operators to the route.

Currently, Eurostar holds a monopoly on cross-Channel train travel, offering services to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

However, London St Pancras Highspeed, in collaboration with Getlink—the company that owns Eurotunnel—has signed an agreement to encourage competition and facilitate new direct connections to key European destinations.

Getlink has identified cities such as Bordeaux, Cologne, Frankfurt, Geneva, Marseille, and Zurich as potential new rail destinations.

A spokesperson for London St Pancras Highspeed highlighted the competitiveness of international train travel, saying, “Many European cities could be reached directly by train in under six hours, which we believe is really competitive with short-haul air travel.”

The company’s goal is to increase international passenger capacity from 1,800 per hour to nearly 5,000, making train travel a more viable and sustainable option for travelers.

New Competitors Eye the Market

The announcement has sparked interest from rival operators eager to challenge Eurostar’s dominance. Virgin Group and Evolyn are among the companies exploring plans to launch new cross-Channel train services.

While acknowledging the complexities of establishing an international train operator, a Virgin Group spokesperson stated that the route was “ripe for change with plenty of room and potential for new competition at St Pancras and through the Tunnel.”

Competition between different train providers, they added, would ultimately benefit passengers by driving down costs and increasing service options.

Eurostar has faced significant route reductions in recent years, including the discontinuation of its London-to-Disneyland Paris service in June 2023 and the removal of routes connecting London to the south of France.

“We will work closely with Getlink to encourage new and existing train operators to expand capacity and launch new destinations, unlocking the potential of a fully connected Europe,” he said.

Industry analysts suggest that increased competition on the cross-Channel rail route could lead to lower fares and better service offerings, similar to the liberalization of domestic rail services in several European countries.

Additionally, as governments push for more sustainable travel options, expanding rail networks could align with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
