Multiple arrests in Germany linked to Cologne Cathedral attack plan

The Tajik suspect was detained on the same day Austria announced the arrests of three more suspects in Vienna, all reportedly linked to a plot orchestrated by Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), an offshoot of the Islamic State operating in Afghanistan. 

According to Bild daily, all four suspects are Tajiks allegedly intending to carry out attacks on behalf of IS-K.

Unraveling the Plot

The investigation, which began with the Tajik’s arrest a week ago, uncovered a plot involving the use of a car for an attack. 

Frank Wissbaum of the Cologne police stated that the specific details of the plan are yet unknown, leading authorities to take precautionary measures. 

Despite deploying sniffer dogs to search the underground parking of the cathedral for explosives, nothing suspicious has been found so far.

Security Measures Stepped Up

Protective measures have been significantly heightened in response to the potential threat, with approximately 1,000 police officers deployed to safeguard the cathedral and the city centre of Cologne. 

Herbert Reul, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, reassured the public that New Year’s festivities can proceed as planned, expressing confidence in the security measures in place.
