Man who crashed car in Russia Embassy, Romania dies after vehicle catched fire

According to authorities, a car smashed into the gate of the Russian embassy in Bucharest, bursting into flames and killing the driver.

The vehicle slammed into the gate about 6 a.m. local time (03:00 GMT) on Wednesday, but was unable to gain access to the Bucharest embassy premises.

As security personnel hurried across the scene, video of the aftermath showed the automobile engulfed in flames.

The fire was put out by firefighters who arrived on the site, but the motorist died at the spot, according to authorities. There was no early word on a probable motivation or other pertinent information.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Romania, which shares a lengthy land border with Ukraine, has taken in more than 600,000 refugees.

Protesters have congregated outside Russia’s embassy in the capital since the war began on February 24 to demand a halt to Russian aggression.

Following a succession of expulsions of Russian officials across the 27-nation European Union, Romania ordered the expulsion of ten diplomats from the embassy on Tuesday.

The conduct of ten embassy employees, who have been deemed persona non grata, “contravene the rules of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” according to Romania’s foreign ministry.
