Libyan Suspect Arrested in Germany Over Alleged Plot to Attack Israeli Embassy

German authorities have arrested a 28-year-old Libyan national suspected of planning a high-profile attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, with potential ties to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The arrest took place on Saturday evening in Bernau, a town near the capital, Berlin, according to a statement from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office released on Sunday.

The suspect, identified only as Omar A under Germany’s strict privacy laws, had allegedly planned to execute an attack using firearms. “He intended to carry out a high-profile attack with firearms on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin,” the prosecutor’s office confirmed.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had been in communication with a member of ISIL through a messenger app, exchanging information pertinent to the planned assault.

Authorities also conducted a search of the suspect’s residence following his arrest. Additionally, security forces searched the home of another individual near the city of Bonn.

This person was considered a witness in the investigation but not a suspect, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The German newspaper Bild reported that the suspect had entered Germany in November 2022, applying for asylum shortly thereafter in January 2023. His request for asylum was rejected in September 2023, just a month before his arrest.

The rejection has raised questions about his activities during the period he was in the country and what security measures were taken following his asylum denial.
