Italian Authority Investigates Armani and Dior Over Misleading Claims and Worker Exploitation

Milan, July 19, 2024 — Italy’s competition authority has launched an investigation into luxury fashion giants Armani and Dior, probing whether the companies misled consumers regarding their ethical standards and social responsibility.

This move follows revelations from Milan prosecutors about severe worker exploitation in the supply chains of the two brands.

According to the Italian Competition Authority, both Armani and Dior may have made false claims about their adherence to ethical practices, particularly concerning labor conditions at their supplier workshops.

The authority’s investigation centers on allegations that the companies’ claims of high craftsmanship and quality standards are undermined by the harsh realities faced by workers in their supply chains.

The probe reveals that the luxury brands, while boasting about their dedication to quality, may have indirectly supported workshops where workers endured poor conditions.

These conditions include inadequate wages, excessive working hours, and unsafe working environments, starkly contrasting the production excellence the companies claim to uphold.

This year, prosecutors in Milan uncovered several workshops on the outskirts of the fashion capital where immigrants, many of whom were undocumented, were reportedly paid meager wages for producing leather goods. These items, including handbags, were then sold to Armani and Dior at a fraction of their retail prices.

The investigation has led to the scrutiny of several Chinese-owned Italian suppliers for both luxury houses. Authorities have appointed commissioners to oversee the production units of Armani and Dior involved in outsourcing handbag manufacturing. The goal is to ensure that these units address and rectify the supply chain issues identified.

In response to the allegations, Dior, which is under the ownership of French luxury conglomerate LVMH, has stated its commitment to cooperating fully with the Italian authorities.

The company has pledged to tighten its oversight of suppliers and to cease ordering from those implicated in the scandal. Despite conducting regular audits, Dior admitted that the implicated suppliers managed to conceal their exploitative practices.

Armani, for its part, has not yet publicly commented on the investigation. However, the fashion house is expected to face increased scrutiny as the investigation progresses.

The scandal highlights a growing concern about transparency and ethics in the luxury fashion industry. The practices uncovered by the prosecutors have raised significant questions about the integrity of luxury brands’ claims regarding ethical production and supply chain management.

The Italian Competition Authority’s investigation underscores the broader challenges faced by the luxury sector in ensuring that its supply chains adhere to the highest standards of labor rights and ethical practices.

As the probe continues, the findings could prompt broader reforms in how luxury brands monitor and manage their global supply chains.

This case serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of transparency in the fashion industry and the need for rigorous enforcement of labor laws to prevent exploitation and uphold ethical standards.
