United Kingdom, England: Harry Kane wins Ballon d’Or after a record-breaking season, ending England’s wait for football’s top individual honour
Harry Kane has made history by becoming the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d’Or, ending a 24-year wait for England’s footballers and securing the biggest individual prize of his remarkable career.
The Bayern Munich striker, aged 33, was crowned the world’s best player at a packed ceremony in London, beating Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe into second place, while Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal finished third.
Kane becomes only the fifth English winner of the prestigious award in its long history, following Stanley Matthews in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966 and Kevin Keegan, who claimed the honour consecutively in 1978 and 1979.
For Kane, the achievement represents the culmination of a career defined by persistence, consistency and an extraordinary ability to improve despite repeatedly facing questions about whether he could deliver football’s biggest individual honours at last.
Speaking after the announcement, Kane reflected on the difficult stages of his development, admitting that few people expected him to reach the level he has eventually achieved after beginning his career without superstar billing or widespread acclaim.
“Not many people would have thought it, and maybe even I wouldn’t have thought I’d be this far,” Kane said, highlighting the self-belief and determination required to overcome setbacks and establish himself among football’s greatest modern forwards.
The England captain has long been regarded as one of the world’s finest strikers, but his career had lacked a major individual award until now, despite years of outstanding scoring records for club and country.
Last season finally produced the statistical campaign that made Kane’s Ballon d’Or case impossible to ignore. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich, the highest single-season total ever recorded by a player at the club.
His domestic record was particularly extraordinary, with 36 Bundesliga goals making him the competition’s leading scorer by a huge margin. Kane finished 17 goals ahead of his nearest challenger, underlining his dominance throughout the German season.
In the Champions League, Kane added 14 goals despite Bayern falling in the semi-finals, while he scored 10 times in the German Cup, including a hat-trick during the final against Stuttgart in a commanding victory.
Those performances helped Kane complete a German double, lifting the Bundesliga and German Cup. Although Bayern’s trophy haul was modest compared with some Ballon d’Or winners, Kane’s individual production separated him from the competition throughout the campaign.
His 61 club goals were 19 more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues managed last season, matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable Real Madrid total from 11 years earlier and confirming Kane’s extraordinary consistency.
Kane’s influence extended beyond Bayern, with the striker scoring 12 times for England during the campaign. Six of those goals came at the World Cup, taking his combined club and international total to 73.
Only Lionel Messi has scored more goals across club and country in a season among players from Europe’s leading leagues. Messi registered 82 for Barcelona and Argentina during the extraordinary 2011-12 campaign at his peak.
Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph is especially notable because it arrived without one of football’s most coveted team trophies. England were eliminated in the World Cup semi-finals, while Bayern also suffered defeat at the same stage in Europe.
That makes Kane only the fifth Ballon d’Or winner in the past two decades to claim the award without winning the World Cup, Champions League or a major continental international championship during the relevant season.
Lamine Yamal, who helped Spain win the World Cup, had been considered one of the strongest candidates, while Mbappe entered the ceremony after another prolific campaign. Kane nevertheless prevailed because his sustained statistical dominance proved decisive.
England manager Thomas Tuchel welcomed Kane’s success, describing the Ballon d’Or as a huge honour. Prince William also praised the forward, calling him a brilliant captain and remarkable player after his historic achievement in London.
The recognition was celebrated in London, where Wembley’s famous arches were illuminated in gold. The display provided a fitting tribute to an English player who has spent years pursuing records while remaining determined to win.
Kane’s success also changes the conversation surrounding his legacy. Long criticised for not collecting enough major trophies, he can now point to the sport’s highest individual honour alongside his extraordinary scoring records and leadership achievements.
His previous best Ballon d’Or finish had been 10th, making this year’s victory an extraordinary leap. The result also rewards the consistency he has maintained since joining Bayern and adapting immediately to German football at the club.
Former England striker Alan Shearer strongly backed Kane before the ceremony, arguing that his numbers for Bayern and England across the previous 12 to 18 months made him the deserving winner and the strongest overall candidate.
Danny Murphy similarly praised Kane’s relentless goalscoring and adaptation at Bayern, describing him as the best centre-forward in the world over the previous year and highlighting the quality of his sustained performances at club level.
The question now is whether Kane can defend his crown. His start to the current campaign suggests another challenge is possible, with 10 goals in his first 12 matches for Bayern across domestic and European competition.
Six more goals for England in four Nations League appearances have taken Kane to 16 goals in 16 matches this season, while Bayern remain unbeaten in both the Bundesliga and Champions League competitions so far.
A potential treble could significantly strengthen Kane’s chances of winning consecutive Ballon d’Or awards. Without a major international tournament next summer, club success and individual performances are likely to dominate the voting among the leading contenders.
However, Kane faces serious competition from Yamal and Mbappe. Yamal has started brilliantly for Barcelona, while Mbappe has continued his prolific scoring form after moving to Real Madrid and remains determined to claim his first Ballon d’Or.
Yamal has already finished second twice, and another Champions League triumph with Barcelona could make him an overwhelming contender. At 20, he would also become the youngest player ever to win the prestigious award if successful.
Mbappe, meanwhile, has begun the season strongly with Real Madrid and France, scoring 14 goals in 13 appearances. His combination of individual numbers, club ambition and international pedigree ensures he will remain central to next year’s race.
For Kane, however, the immediate priority is enjoying a landmark moment that once seemed distant. After years of near misses and doubts, he has finally joined England’s Ballon d’Or winners and secured a place in football history.
