Paris, France: A German tourist lost his life, and two others were injured in a knife attack near the Quai de Grenelle, a location merely 15 minutes away from the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The assailant struck at approximately 7 pm (Paris Time), targeting a couple with a knife and fatally wounding the German national, according to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin. 

The attacker, after the initial assault, continued his rampage, wielding a hammer and injuring two more individuals before being subdued by the police, who deployed a Taser to apprehend him.

Darmanin revealed that the assailant, during the attack, shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) and conveyed to the police that his actions were motivated by distress over the situation in Afghanistan and Palestine, where he claimed “so many Muslims are dying.” 

The prompt response of the police was lauded by Darmanin, who acknowledged that the toll might have been higher without their swift intervention.

The deceased German national’s identity has been confirmed, while details about the other victims are yet to be disclosed. The attacker, a 25-year-old French national, is currently in custody. 

Darmanin disclosed that the suspect had a criminal history, having served a four-year prison term before being released in 2020. Notably, the assailant was under surveillance and receiving psychiatric treatment.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into the incident, signaling concerns about potential terror-related motives behind the attack. 

France has been on a heightened terror alert since the fatal stabbing of a teacher in Arras in October, raising questions about the country’s security preparedness, especially with the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris less than eight months away.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, responding to the tragedy, affirmed France’s unwavering stance against terrorism. “We will cede nothing in the face of terrorism.
