China shut off the whole city of Wuhan and its 11 million occupants on Thursday in a phenomenal effort to contain the destructive new coronavirus from spreading across the country in the Lunar New Year travel surge.
Outbound flights were dropped, shops, eateries and other open spaces in the city were frightfully vacant.
Police, SWAT groups and paramilitary soldiers monitored the city’s train station, where metal boundaries hindered the doorways.
“As far as anyone is concerned, attempting to contain a city of 11 million individuals is new to science,” Gauden Galea, the World Wellbeing Association’s delegate in China, told the AP. “It has not been attempted before as a general wellbeing measure. We can’t at this stage say it will, or it won’t work.”
The choice comes as the head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the crisis panel would meet for a subsequent day to address the “developing and complex circumstance”.
It will settle on Thursday whether to pronounce the contamination a general wellbeing crisis.
Ghebreyesus said that the measure in Wuhan was “solid” however that China would “limit the odds of this flare-up spreading universally”.
