Brussels, Belgium — With the arrival of warmer temperatures reaching up to 18°C this week, residents of Brussels are embracing the long-awaited sunshine and school holidays by partaking in vibrant local Carnival celebrations.
Despite Lent already being underway, the festive spirit is still alive across the city, offering a range of parades, music, and cultural events.
Carnival, traditionally held in the days preceding Lent, serves as a lively farewell to indulgences before the fasting period. While the timing of festivities can vary, Belgium’s capital is keeping the tradition alive with multiple events scheduled for this weekend and beyond.
Saint-Gilles Carnival: A Burst of Color and Rhythm
On Saturday, March 8, the municipality of Saint-Gilles will host the 26th edition of its annual Carnival, promising an afternoon filled with music and merriment.
Participants are encouraged to dress in colorful costumes and join a procession led by percussion groups, spreading joy with confetti, sweets, and lively applause.
The parade is set to depart from Place Morichar at 14:30 and conclude at Place Bethléem by 16:00. The event not only highlights the communal spirit of Saint-Gilles but also offers a chance for residents and visitors alike to celebrate spring’s arrival in style.
Venetian Flair at Les Marolles
Also on Saturday, the historic neighborhood of Les Marolles, situated between Saint-Gilles and the City of Brussels, will transform into a scene straight out of Venice with its Venetian Carnival, known as ‘Carnaval Venise.’
Although registrations for participation closed on February 15, spectators are welcome to marvel at the array of intricate masks, feathers, and costumes.
The parade, featuring a rich display of Italian-inspired elegance, will begin at 11:00 and weave through the streets before reaching the iconic Grand Place at 14:00.
The event is expected to draw substantial crowds eager to experience a touch of Venetian opulence in the heart of Brussels.
Family Fun in Forest
The festive weekend continues on Sunday, March 9, in the Forest district, where the SoHab Bempt organization is hosting the 16th edition of the ‘Carnaval Pour Pas un Balle.’
Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, the event kicks off at 14:00 in Square Madelon with a selection of food from ‘La cuisine de Bouchra.’
The parade, featuring both children and adults, will start at 14:30, winding through the neighborhood with lively music and decorated floats. This community-driven celebration emphasizes inclusivity and offers a budget-friendly way for families to join the festivities.
Looking Ahead: Laeken Carnival in May
For those eager for more, the Laeken Carnival scheduled for Sunday, May 25, promises an extensive lineup of activities, including workshops on costume and mask making, musical instrument crafting, and more.
