Biden rallies NATO allies in Poland, citing support for Kyiv

US Vice President Joe Biden has rallied NATO allies in Poland, saying that the US will “unwaveringly” support Kyiv.

It comes as Putin, Biden’s Russian counterpart, says that Moscow will stop taking part in a nuclear arms treaty with the US.

Biden used his trip on Tuesday to try to get more support for Ukraine as the war goes on into its second year with no end in sight.

“One year ago, everyone was getting ready for Kyiv to fall,” Biden said. “I can tell you that Kyiv is standing strong, proud, tall, and, most importantly, free.”

Biden spoke after meeting Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is a NATO ally and a strong supporter of the West giving Kyiv more help.

The declaration came after Trump made an unannounced trip to Ukraine on Monday. It was the first time in recent memory that a US president went to a warzone where US troops were not in charge.

Poland has the longest border with Ukraine of any NATO country, and it has been the main way for weapons to get in and for refugees to get out. The two leaders were supposed to talk about Poland’s security and how NATO could help that country more.

Putin said on Tuesday that Moscow would stop taking part in the New START treaty, which is a key nuclear arms deal with the U.S. He said this in his “state of the nation” speech before the first anniversary of the campaign in Ukraine.

Putin also said that the West was making things worse and that Russia would keep fighting to “systematically” reach its goals.

The leader of Russia said that the West wants “to be done with us once and for all,” but he said that putting more and more sanctions on Russia “will not work.”

The treaty, which is the last agreement between the world’s two biggest nuclear powers to limit their nuclear weapons, has been extended until early 2026.

After Putin’s speech, both France and the UK asked the Kremlin to change its mind about leaving the treaty.
