Vienna—Rapid Vienna striker Guido Burgstaller is facing several months on the sidelines after sustaining a skull fracture in a violent attack over the weekend in the Austrian capital.
The 35-year-old, who has been capped 26 times by Austria, was assaulted by an unidentified man in Vienna’s city center, according to a statement released by his club.
Rapid Vienna confirmed the forward suffered a “serious head injury” after falling and fracturing his skull following a “brutal blow” delivered by the attacker.
Emergency responders examined Burgstaller at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he is expected to remain under observation for the next few days.
“This is a deeply shocking incident,” Rapid Vienna said in their official statement. “We trust the responsible authorities to ensure that the as-yet-unknown perpetrator will be brought to justice quickly.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and law enforcement officials are currently investigating the incident. Authorities have not disclosed further details about potential suspects or the circumstances surrounding the assault.
A Career of Highs and Setbacks
Burgstaller, a prolific forward with a long career spanning Austria, Germany, and Wales, rejoined Rapid Vienna in 2022 after stints with Cardiff City, Nurnberg, Schalke, and St. Pauli. Known for his tenacity on the pitch, Burgstaller first signed with Rapid early in his career before making his mark abroad.
He joined Cardiff City in 2014, becoming one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s earliest signings as the club sought to rebuild following relegation from the Premier League.
Despite high expectations, Burgstaller struggled for game time in Wales, making just three appearances before moving to German side Nurnberg.
His time in Germany proved far more fruitful, particularly with Schalke, where he became a key player and scored 20 Bundesliga goals. He later captained St. Pauli, earning praise for his leadership both on and off the field.
Controversy and Comeback
Burgstaller’s career has not been without controversy. In 2023, he and two other Austria players faced public backlash after being filmed singing homophobic chants during a post-match celebration following a 3-0 victory over Austria Vienna.
National team manager Ralf Rangnick dropped the trio from the squad, calling their behavior “incompatible with the values we stand for.”
Despite this setback, Burgstaller continued to perform strongly at the club level, helping Rapid Vienna remain competitive in Austria’s Bundesliga.
Community and Club Rally Behind Burgstaller
Fans and teammates have expressed their shock and support for the striker. Rapid Vienna supporters have taken to social media to wish Burgstaller a swift recovery, while the club has pledged to provide him with all necessary support during his rehabilitation.
“Guido is a fighter on and off the field,” said a Rapid Vienna spokesperson. “We are confident that he will recover and come back stronger.”
As Burgstaller begins his recovery, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the violence that can unexpectedly disrupt the lives of public figures. Austrian authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward as they work to apprehend the assailant.
