Aston Villa Secure Loan Move for Marcus Rashford with £40m Option to Buy

Aston Villa have completed the loan signing of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, with the 27-year-old joining until the end of the season in a deal that includes an option to buy for £40 million.

Sources at Old Trafford have confirmed that Villa will cover at least 75% of Rashford’s wages, though no loan fee has been paid.

The move follows weeks of speculation surrounding Rashford’s future after a dip in form and his omission from Erik ten Hag’s squad for the Manchester derby in December.

Taking to Instagram to express his thoughts on the transfer, Rashford said: “I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen. I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me but Aston Villa was an easy decision—I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions. I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

The England international had earlier signaled his desire for a “new challenge” following his omission from the United starting lineup.

His move to Villa Park comes as Unai Emery’s side look to bolster their squad in their push for European football, particularly after their 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Saturday.

Villa Strengthen Amid Injury Woes

Rashford’s arrival is part of a broader recruitment drive by Villa in the January transfer window, with the club also nearing a loan deal for Spain midfielder Marco Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain.

Emery has been vocal about the need for reinforcements following a spate of injuries that has disrupted Villa’s campaign. On Saturday, star striker Ollie Watkins limped off with an injury, adding to the club’s growing concerns in attack.

Meanwhile, the defensive unit has also been stretched thin, with central midfielder Boubacar Kamara being deployed as a makeshift centre-back due to injuries to Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings.

In addition to Rashford and Asensio, Villa have already secured Spanish full-back Andres Garcia from Levante and Netherlands forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

The club, however, sanctioned the departures of Colombian striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for £71 million and Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos to Turkish club Fenerbahce for around £8.45 million.

Further Outgoings at Villa Park

Alongside the incomings, Villa confirmed on Monday that young Serbian defender Kosta Nedeljkovic has joined Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year-old, who arrived from Red Star Belgrade in January 2024, has struggled for regular game time, making just two starts since his arrival.

With Rashford now joining the ranks at Villa Park, Emery will hope the forward can quickly find form and help drive his side’s European ambitions in the second half of the season.

The move offers Rashford a fresh start after a challenging spell at Old Trafford and an opportunity to reignite his career under Emery’s guidance.
