Arrest Made in Death Threats Against Geert Wilders

Amsterdam, March 12, 2024 – Police in Amsterdam have confirmed the arrest of a man suspected of making death threats against the far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders. 

The arrest comes after Wilders revealed the threats in a tweet on Friday, expressing gratitude for the swift action of law enforcement.

Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), disclosed the alarming situation on social media, stating that the individual had expressed intentions to kill him. 

“I would be an easy target without the police,” Wilders emphasized, shedding light on the seriousness of the threat.

The authorities have not disclosed the identity and motives of the arrested individual. However, Wilders has been a prominent figure in Dutch politics and is known for his outspoken views on Islam, which have garnered significant controversy over the years. This has, unfortunately, made him a frequent target of threats and attacks.

Since 2004, Wilders has been subjected to a barrage of death threats, which he described as sometimes numbering in the hundreds per day. 

The constant menace has compelled him to live under 24-hour security and reside in a safe house, profoundly affecting his personal life and posing a threat to the democratic principles of the nation, as Wilders has previously stated.

The severity of the situation was underscored by a significant development last year when a Dutch court sentenced Khalid Latif, a Pakistani cricketer, to 12 years in absentia. 

Latif was found guilty of offering a substantial reward of €21,000 for the assassination of Geert Wilders in 2018. However, the lack of an extradition treaty between the Netherlands and Pakistan complicates the execution of the sentence.

The arrest marks a critical step in addressing the ongoing security challenges faced by Geert Wilders and underscores the gravity of threats posed to political figures.
