Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in their opening FIFA Club World Cup fixture on Wednesday, as new manager Xabi Alonso’s debut on the touchline failed to bring the desired spark in the sweltering Florida heat.
The 15-time European champions, playing in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, struggled to impose themselves against a spirited and tactically organised Al Hilal side under new coach Simone Inzaghi.
With star forward Kylian Mbappe sidelined due to illness, it was Gonzalo Garcia who stepped up for Los Blancos. The Spanish youngster gave Real the lead in the 34th minute with a well-taken finish following an intricate passing sequence down the right wing. The goal brought a brief moment of relief for Madrid, who had looked disjointed and sluggish in the opening half-hour.
Al Hilal, Saudi Arabia’s most decorated club, responded with poise and determination. Their efforts were rewarded when Portuguese international Ruben Neves calmly converted a penalty before the break, sending Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois the wrong way after a clumsy challenge in the box.
From there, the match became increasingly tense, with both sides creating but failing to convert further chances. Real had a golden opportunity to steal the victory in added time when Federico Valverde stepped up for a penalty after a VAR review went in their favour. However, the Uruguayan midfielder blazed his effort wide, summing up an evening of frustration for Alonso’s side.
“It was a really demanding environment,” Alonso told DAZN post-match, reflecting on the 90°F (32°C) conditions. “The first half was not as good as the second; we improved and had better chances and control. Every game, we need to take positives, we can learn and keep improving.”
Despite the underwhelming result, the match marked a significant moment for England international Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his debut for Real Madrid after completing a high-profile move from Liverpool.
“Incredible day to have made a debut for Real Madrid, almost every player dreams of it,” said the 26-year-old full-back. “Of course, there is disappointment not to have won the game, and that is the mentality you need as a Real player – to expect to win every game.”
Alexander-Arnold praised Madrid’s second-half composure in retaining possession under extreme humidity, but acknowledged missed opportunities. “We made them sit deep, put crosses in and got shots off. We had the late penalty, but these things happen in football.”
Al Hilal, meanwhile, left the pitch with a sense of pride and what might have been. Leonardo squandered three clear chances in front of goal, and with star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic absent through injury, Inzaghi’s side lacked a clinical edge.
The result leaves Group H wide open. RB Salzburg and Pachuca were set to meet in the other group fixture later on Wednesday. Real Madrid will face the Mexican side on Sunday, while Al Hilal take on Salzburg in a potentially decisive clash for knockout stage qualification.
For Alonso and Madrid, improvements will be needed quickly if they are to justify their billing as tournament favourites.
