Manchester City’s defensive woes deepened as manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Thursday that star central defender Ruben Dias will be sidelined for “three or four weeks” due to a muscle injury.
The Portuguese international suffered the setback during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, a match that marked another difficult outing for the Premier League champions.
Dias’ absence comes at a crucial juncture in City’s season. He will miss the festive fixture schedule, including the FA Cup third-round tie against Salford on January 11, and faces a race against time to be fit for the Champions League showdown with Paris St-Germain on January 22.
The 27-year-old has already missed seven games this season with a calf injury, compounding City’s defensive challenges.
“It’s a muscular problem, and he will be out for three to four weeks,” Guardiola revealed during his pre-match press conference. “After 75 minutes against United, he felt something. But he’s so strong and wanted to stay on the pitch. Now he’s injured.”
Defensive Crisis Deepens
City’s defensive frailties have been magnified by a string of injuries this season. Key players including John Stones, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, and Kyle Walker have all faced time on the sidelines.
Additionally, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, a vital cog in the defensive midfield, is out for the remainder of the domestic season with a cruciate knee ligament injury.
However, there is some relief on the horizon, as Guardiola confirmed that Stones, Akanji, and midfielder Mateo Kovacic have returned to training and could feature in Saturday’s away clash against Aston Villa. Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Ederson remains doubtful due to a leg issue.
“Ederson has been struggling with some niggles in his leg, he doesn’t feel completely fine,” said Guardiola. “He’s so important for us, but we will assess him closer to the game.”
Youngsters Underused Amid Struggles
City’s challenging run, with just one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions, has sparked questions over Guardiola’s reluctance to use young talents James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly.
Despite the club opting to retain the duo amid loan offers, McAtee has been limited to two last-minute substitute appearances, while O’Reilly is yet to make his Premier League debut.
Guardiola indicated that both players are likely to stay for the remainder of the season but did not rule out the possibility of bolstering the squad in the January transfer window. “I’m not a big fan of buying players in January, but the circumstances of this season have been special,” he said.
Optimism Amidst Challenges
Guardiola acknowledged the struggles his team is facing but struck an optimistic tone ahead of the Villa trip. “We’ve fallen six times in the Premier League, but we have to stand up seven. There is no alternative,” he said.
The manager also defended under-fire forward Jack Grealish, who hasn’t scored for City in over a year. “We are struggling to create up front, but I remain optimistic about my players. They will turn it around,” Guardiola affirmed.
As City look to regain form, the extended absence of Dias adds another challenge to their pursuit of success in both domestic and European competitions.
