Macron to Appoint New Prime Minister Friday to Restore Stability

The delay comes after a tumultuous period in French politics, with Macron seeking to restore stability following months of political deadlock. Macron had initially been expected to name a successor to Michel Barnier, who was ousted as prime minister by a no-confidence vote just eight days ago

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will wait until Friday to reveal his choice for the country’s next prime minister, according to the Elysée Palace.

The delay comes after a tumultuous period in French politics, with Macron seeking to restore stability following months of political deadlock.

Macron had initially been expected to name a successor to Michel Barnier, who was ousted as prime minister by a no-confidence vote just eight days ago.

However, after returning from a visit to Poland, the president’s team confirmed that the announcement would not be made until Friday morning.

This delay has fueled concerns over the political situation, with a recent opinion poll for BFMTV revealing that 61% of French voters are worried about the ongoing turmoil.

Since Macron’s call for snap parliamentary elections earlier this summer, the country’s political landscape has been in disarray. The elections produced a fragmented parliament, with three major blocs emerging from the left, center, and far-right.

The fallout from these elections led to the formation of a minority government under Barnier, but his plans for significant tax cuts and spending increases were rejected by a coalition of left-wing MPs and Le Pen’s far-right National Rally.

As a result, Barnier’s government collapsed, and Macron is now tasked with navigating the fractured political terrain to avoid a similar fate for his new prime minister.

Macron’s choices for the next prime minister are under intense scrutiny, with several candidates emerging as frontrunners.

Among them are centrist MoDem leader François Bayrou, Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, and former center-left prime minister Bernard Cazeneuve. However, the formation of a new government is complicated by divisions within the left-wing parties.

The Socialist Party, Greens, and Communists have all signaled their willingness to participate in discussions with Macron’s government, but they have also made clear their desire for a left-wing prime minister to lead the charge.

Greens leader Marine Tondelier has expressed opposition to Bayrou, arguing that he does not align with the leftist policies the Greens seek. Tondelier also rejected the idea of Cazeneuve taking up the role, citing his past criticisms of the Green Party.

Meanwhile, Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, has responded to calls from Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s far-left France Unbowed (LFI) to avoid a coalition with Macron, saying, “the more Mélenchon shouts, the less he’s heard.”

The current political deadlock leaves Macron with the challenge of forming a government that can gain the support of a majority in the National Assembly.

While he has held talks with all major political parties, including the centre-left, excluding LFI and the far-right National Rally, the divisions within the left-wing parties present a significant obstacle.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, has called for the new government to consider her party’s policies, particularly on the cost of living, when drafting the 2025 budget.

Despite her rejection of Barnier’s government, Le Pen’s demands underscore the delicate balancing act Macron faces in his efforts to build a coalition.

As France waits for the announcement of its new prime minister, the political situation remains fluid.

Macron must carefully navigate the intricate web of party alliances and rivalries to avoid further instability and ensure the survival of his next government.
