Brexit trade deal EU by Dec 2020, says Michael Gove

Michael Gove has categorically affirmed the UK will have a trade agreement with the EU by the end of next time, notwithstanding deep reservations in Brussels regarding whether this is plausible.

The senior minister displayed the prime in Boris Johnson’s cabinet to replicate that promise after the election, saying transitional arrangements would surely stop at the finish of December 2020.

He said consultations on the UK’s future relations with the EU “would be decided next year”.

Notwithstanding his reliance, EU leaders are contemplating a move to take the drive and demand expansion to the transition period, following the UK below Brussels regulations beyond 2020.

EU executives are mooting the movement as a way out of the obstacle posed by the short-term possible to negotiate a new relationship and the prime minister’s emphasis that he will not seek an extension exceeding 11 months.

Amid the election campaign, Johnson and his ministers frequently emphasised that there would be no extension to transitional patterns, increasing the prospect of an exit on World Trade Organization terms if no trade deal can be thumped by then.

However, Gove, who has been tipped for a major leading trade talks role under Johnson, rejected the idea that it will take more prolonged, asserting that it was almost ready to go.

Articulating to Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday, he said: “Quite a lot of the details that we need to arrange is already placed out in the political declaration, so a lot of work has been completed.

“And as several people have pointed out, there are fields where the European Union’s interests and the United Kingdom’s interests are already firmly aligned, so I’m confident that we will be effective not just to leave the EU on 31 January but also to end all the details of a new connection in short form.”

Asked whether this would be yet another dead promise, like Johnson’s commitment to take the UK out of the EU “do or die”, Gove said: “Nope.”

Notwithstanding Gove’s determination, a new report from the Institute for Government suggested that Whitehall is not “match fit” for the next period of Brexit negotiations.

Raoul Ruparel, a former adviser to Theresa May and David Davis, who was recognised with reaching up with the Northern Ireland explication which helped Boris Johnson seal a Brexit deal with the EU, said teachings need to be learned from the errors of May’s government.

“There is a huge amount of work to be done to flesh out the detail of what the UK wants from its future relationship with the EU, and Whitehall is not yet ready to negotiate such a complex and wide-ranging agreement, nor implement it,” he said.
