Met Office-Named Storm Antoni Brings Unseasonably Strong Winds and Heavy Rain to UK

The UK has been hit by its first Met Office-named storm of the year as Storm Antoni made landfall late on Friday, leaving forecasters warning of “unseasonably” strong winds that could pose a danger to life. The storm is expected to continue its assault into Saturday, unleashing powerful winds and heavy rainfall across various regions.

The Met Office has taken no chances, issuing two amber weather warnings specifically focused on the wind. West Wales and parts of southwest England are the areas under the highest alert. Meanwhile, forecasters predict Northern Ireland is likely to bear the brunt of the heaviest rainfall associated with Storm Antoni.

A yellow warning for rain has been extended across most of Northern Ireland, spanning from 08:00 to 20:00 BST. Concurrently, a yellow warning for wind encompasses a similar time frame and covers areas of south-west England, including Plymouth, Bristol, and Bath.

With gusts anticipated to reach speeds of up to 65mph, the UK’s coastline is bracing for impact. The Met Office has emphasized the potential danger, alerting the public about the possibility of “injuries and danger to life from flying debris.” Coastal regions are particularly vulnerable, as large waves and beach materials could be thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington highlighted the disruptive nature of Storm Antoni’s trajectory, stating, “The storm would bring ‘potentially disruptive’ weather as it moved from west to east.” He also indicated that Northern Ireland would likely experience the highest rainfall levels, with projections ranging from 40-60mm in localized areas and 20-30mm more widely.

The sustained downpours could lead to instances of flooding and travel disruption, prompting the RAC’s Rod Dennis to issue a warning to drivers. He urged them to exercise extreme caution due to the “atrocious” driving conditions. Dennis advised drivers to reduce their speed significantly, avoid exposed moorland and coastal routes until the storm abates, and pay particular attention to the security of trailers, caravans, and roof-mounted cargo.
