Eight, including toddler killed by Russian attack in eastern Ukraine

Police and the governor say that a Russian missile attack on a civilian area in the city of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine killed at least eight people, including a young child.

The attack on the quiet area happened on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that makes it easier to draught people into the army and makes it harder for them to leave the country if they are called up.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of the Donetsk region, said on national TV that seven Russian S-300 missiles were fired at Sloviansk, which is west of the city of Bakhmut and where the fighting on the Ukrainian front line is the worst.

“As of right now, there have been casualties at all sites: 21 people have been hurt and 8 have died,” Kyrylenko said on national TV.

Ukrainian police said on Twitter that a child who had been pulled from the rubble died in an ambulance.

Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, said the child was a boy who was two years old. She sent her condolences to the family for their “indescribable grief.”

In a post with a video of a destroyed building, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “The evil state once again shows what it is made of.”

Ukrainian police said that the attack hurt 10 houses. They said that after the attack, the top two floors of a five-story building had fallen down and a fire had started across the street.
