20 Places to Go in 2026: Global Destinations Shaping Next Year’s Travel

As global travel continues its post-pandemic evolution, 2026 is shaping up to be a landmark year for explorers seeking both novelty and meaning. A newly released list of 20 must-visit destinations highlights places across six continents poised to capture travelers’ attention through improved access, major cultural moments, and rare natural phenomena.

Leading the list is Adelaide, Australia, where the launch of the first-ever direct flights from the United States is expected to give South Australia’s capital a significant tourism boost. Long known for its wine regions, festivals, and coastal beauty, Adelaide is now more accessible than ever for international visitors.

In North Africa, Algeria stands out as a rare opportunity for crowd-free exploration. Online tourist visas have only been available since 2023, making 2026 an ideal time to experience its Roman ruins, Sahara landscapes, and Mediterranean cities before mass tourism arrives.

Europe features prominently, with Spain’s Aragon region preparing for a total solar eclipse in 2026, an astronomical event expected to draw skywatchers from around the world. Belgium’s capital, Brussels, will unveil KANAL, a major new contemporary art museum, while Devon in the UK celebrates the life and legacy of crime novelist Agatha Christie.

Africa and the Middle East also claim their place on the list. Arusha, Tanzania, offers access to national parks nestled between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, while Bahrain is reinventing itself with a wave of luxury hotel openings that give the Gulf nation a fresh tourism profile.

In the Americas, destinations range from the wild to the historic. Chilean fjords are being added to new cruise itineraries, opening up one of South America’s most dramatic seascapes.

The Caribbean island of Dominica highlights sustainability as home to the world’s first sperm whale reserve, while Jamaica signals readiness to welcome visitors again after hurricane devastation in 2025.

The United States features strongly thanks to its upcoming Semiquincentennial. Philadelphia, the nation’s first capital, will host major celebrations, while coastal cities participate in Sail250 maritime events. Santa Monica, California, will also draw visitors as Route 66 marks its 100th anniversary.

Asia’s picks include Kanazawa, Japan, offering a calmer alternative to Tokyo and Kyoto, Penang’s rich Chinese-Malaysian heritage, Mongolia’s remote Orkhon Valley, and East Timor, Asia’s youngest country now stepping onto the tourism stage.

Rounding out the list are colder and more remote choices, from Oulu, Finland, near the Arctic Circle, to St. Pierre and Miquelon, France’s last North American outpost, and Peru’s newly opened archaeological site of Peñico.

Together, these destinations reflect a shift toward meaningful travel—where access, authenticity, and experience matter more ever.
